π‘ ProBonOokulli Tip: Redundancy Protection During Pregnancy (UK) Starting 6 April 2024, pregnant employees have stronger legal protection if facing redundancy.
πΆ When Does Protection Start?
π From the moment you inform your employer that you're pregnant.
π It lasts 18 months from the date your baby is born.
π If you donβt give an exact birth date, it lasts 18 months from the expected week.
π What If Thereβs a Miscarriage or Stillbirth?
π If before 24 weeks: protection lasts 2 weeks from end of pregnancy.
π If after 24 weeks (stillbirth): protection still lasts 18 months from date of birth.
π’ Why It Matters:
During this time, you must be offered any suitable alternative roles ahead of other employees if redundancies happen.
π Employers who donβt follow this law?
It could be automatically unfair dismissal, and potentially pregnancy or maternity discrimination.
